The founding of Volia Alliance
Volia Alliance – Will and Freedom in Action
Today, we take an important step. With the founding of the Volia Alliance, we are gathering the experience, networks, and commitment of Danish civil society to support Ukrainian civil society at a time when it is under historic pressure.
We are experiencing something paradoxical in Denmark: fewer people are engaging with Ukraine—not necessarily because the will or sympathy is lacking, but because the gap between intention and action has grown wider. We can change that. We can build a bridge between the Danes who wish to contribute and the Ukrainians who keep hope alive in their local communities every day.
Many strong organizations in Denmark focus on acute emergency aid, equipment, and support for the front lines. This is crucial and important. However, there is also a need for something more: to raise our gaze and move up the organizational ladder. To build partnerships, knowledge-sharing communities, and long-term initiatives based in Ukraine that can strengthen democracy, trust, and human cohesion—both now and on the other side of the war.
That is why we are founding the Volia Alliance. An organization whose starting point is Ukraine and whose strength lies in the community between Danes and Ukrainians, between Nordic civil society organizations and local partners, between hope and action.
And this is precisely the core of the words we have written into the preamble of our statutes:
“We humans are not created to stand alone. We need communities—relationships where we are seen, recognized, and given the opportunity to take responsibility. Civil society constitutes the framework for this development. It is here that trust, values, and a sense of responsibility arise.”
— Statutes of the Volia Alliance
In Ukraine, we have seen this with our own eyes. During the war, civil society has become a network of hope—a place where freedom becomes concrete through action and responsibility, carried by people.
It is also meaningful, therefore, that we have chosen the name Volia Alliance. In Ukrainian, volia means both will and freedom—not just as ideas, but as the inner force that moves people to act, to choose, and to hold onto their dignity.
Our goal is simple and bold:
To gather knowledge, experience, and commitment into a broad civil alliance that can serve as a bridge between Denmark and Ukraine—and to strengthen the civil society that is today vital for Ukraine’s future.
This is the beginning.
And we hope you will join us.
